endlessly curious
I’m glad I kept my broom out from last round when the Wings beat the Coyotes because the Tampa Bay Lightning swept the Washington Capitals last night. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t screaming and ecstatic at the end of the third period. I’m hopeful that the Bolts will not mirror the Wings next round and be down 3-0 in the series.
I get jealous when they show outside shots of the St. Pete Times Forum. I keep thinking I have been there, I lived there, why am I not there now! Hmmm it’s only a short plane ride away…
The Lightning should definitely pat themselves on the back for beating Washington, especially since they showed them up at the end of the season while both teams battled for the number one spot in the eastern conference. After they are done congratulating each other they should remember that Washington has a history of choking in the playoffs and they took a lot of penalties this round that could be the difference between winning and losing in the next. The conference finals are definitely going to be tougher.
Even so, I can’t wait until Eastern Conference Finals start! Go Bolts!
This was a sweet goal – way to go Tampa walking into Washington’s rink and taking a 2 game lead in the series.
*Notice the Capitals fan flipping Lecavalier off? *
We won’t mention the Wings…
If I can’t have the Wings in the finals (I haven’t given up hope!), I’d love to see Tampa versus Nashville. An eastern and western conference Cinderella story.
I don’t want to say it…Look what happened to Vancouver last night against Chicago…
Also playing tonight and on Versus – Tampa Bay Lightning! Woo 7pm game time.

I’m really excited for the playoffs this year because the Tampa Bay Lightning made it and are holding their own against the Penguins. Also because this year marks the 20th year Detroit has made it to the playoffs.
I realize that the playoffs actually started last week but you’ll have to forgive me since I was off exploring Ireland for 9 days.
Lisa had tickets to the first playoff game last Wednesday, I was almost bummed to be in Ireland because I would have loved to have gone. It was a good game too, we made sure to catch the highlights when we had internet access.
Every year Chuck, Keith, Stefanie and I pick teams. Here are my picks for this year:
Detroit
Vancouver
San Jose
Anaheim
Tampa Bay
Washington (Even though I’d like to see the Rangers win)
Montreal
Buffalo
Who are you rooting for? Share your pick for the finals in the comment section, I’d love to hear who you’ve got.

7 Apr 2011Remember how I mentioned that Chuck and I took a one time class at the Yourist Studio? Well, I picked our finished little pots this past Tuesday. They are adorable, I love mine. It’s funny because it’s no secret that Chuck and I are pretty much opposites and our pots reflect that. The colors we chose for our glaze are completely different and while his pots are wide and tall, mine are short and petite.
Can you tell which ones belong to me?
I really enjoyed this craft and when I went in to pick up the pots everyone was so friendly. It would be a great atmosphere to learn and work in. I think a pottery class may be next on my things to do.
I’ll always be younger…muhahahaha
Today is Chuck’s birthday. As I type this I wonder if he cares that I just told the whole world his age, hmmm I hope not. He treats his birthday just as another day, which I really don’t understand. No really, it blows my mind. I’d celebrate birth week or month if people would let me. In honor of Chuck’s birthday here is a list of 35 things that have happened on March 29th in the past 35 years.

24 Mar 2011“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
Roger Caras
On Wednesday, Chuck and I had to do the hardest things in our lives. We had to put our needs aside and choose to let sweet Nani go. Over the past couple of months we have been in and out of the veterinary office trying to treat what at first was thought to be a severe ear infection and then bad teeth.
Last Thursday (3/17) she had two molars removed that were said to be causing an infection that was causing swelling in her face, as well as nasal discharge and a runny eye. We had had some problems getting her to eat (which if you knew her is kind of a big deal) but it was attributed to being senstive to antibiotics and tooth pain. Even though she wasn’t eating like she used to she was still getting around, banging her tail in greeting and letting you know when she was done cuddling by completely ignoring you.
On Monday night Chuck was throwing Nani’s ball because she wanted to play, but it rolled past her feet, she couldn’t see it. We had a vet appointment on Tuesday that Chuck took her to. The doctor was very concerned because it seemed overnight Nani had lost her vision. I got he news as I was driving home and when I walked in the door upset she looked in the direction of the door and flapped her tail on the couch, ears perked because she knew it was me. She was still in high spirits. I thought that if she was only blind we could deal but in my heart I knew it had to be something deeper. That night Chuck, Nani and I sat on the couch eating chili dogs and tater tots (healthy, I know). Nani was sitting behind me and kept hanging her head upside down so her lip would flap up, it looked like she was smiling, she wanted my tater tots.
On Wednesday we got up to go to our 9am appointment with a veterinary ophthalmologist at Michigan Veterinary Services just a mile or so from our house. We took her in and went through a short exam with the doctor. He recommended two tests and if they came back normal he wanted to do a CT scan to check for a mass.
Since we lived so close we let them take her and we went home waiting for the results and what we could do next. We were informed they wanted to do a CT scan, which is not at all inexpensive. Chuck and I both agreed that we needed, for ourselves, to know what was causing all of Nani’s symptoms. We knew the outcome wouldn’t be great but we were under the impression that they would give her a CT scan and we could pick her up and go from there. Maybe it would mean she didn’t have long to live but we were ready to deal with that when the time came.
We were robbed of that opportunity. What the doctors found on Nani’s CT scan astounded even them. She had a massive brain tumor that had destroyed the facial bone in her left side, invaded her nasal cavities and her brain. It was so bad that they recommended that we not even wake her up from the anesthesia because it could be risky bringing her out. On top of the fact that she had just been put under 4 days earlier. It was then we had to decide what we were going to do. They could wake her up, but for what? So we could selfishly look at her all doped up and say goodbye only to let her go? They said we could take her home for a few days but that the tumor was so severe that within hours/days she would start having seizures, loose coordination, etc. It was inevitable. They were beyond shocked that she had lasted this long without showing more symptoms, such as head tilting and circling. I had noticed her head tilting last Friday but thought she was in pain from having her molars removed. So we said our goodbyes and held her while she passed over the rainbow bridge.
We did what we had to do and what felt right but not regretting our decision doesn’t help with the pain and loss we feel in our hearts. Nani was a stubborn, self-efficient dog. She was there when I was grieving my Mom. I used to cry into her neck and she would just lay there and absorb it, but it wasn’t because she liked being cuddled. Oh no, only on her time and when she would allow it. Chuck thought she was a spoiled dog when he first met her but it didn’t take long for him to fall in love with her quirkiness, hound dog bark and eye rolls. She was a special baby that will be greatly missed. She left his world wagging her tail and happy to meet people, even if they were the last people she would ever see.
Rest in Peace Baby Girl

A couple months ago I bought a Groupon for the Yourist Studio’s “Try it Once” Experience with Clay in Ann Arbor. With a slight twisting of his arm Chuck bought it too so we could go together. The demonstration was short and we got dirty in no time. We got to use pottery wheels and make two bowls, which the studio is glazing for us and should be able to pick up soon.
I was surprisingly good at shaping the clay, even better than Chuck, if you can believe that. He is usually annoyingly skilled at most things. I think it’s because he tends to be more detail oriented than myself.
My only complaint, if you could call it that, was that the experience felt very rushed. We got started at 1pm and I was in the car by 2:20. The class was just to get a feel for what the studio has to offer so I understand why we weren’t in there longer.
I really enjoyed it more and it didn’t hurt that the teacher told me both of my pieces were beautiful. Haha. The 6 week classes are $159 with a $15 lab fee, which I don’t find unreasonable. I will definitely be giving some thought to pottery now. And if nothing else, I have a new found appreciation for potters and their art.

16 Mar 2011The NHL facebook page posted this and it’s too funny not to share.
Yzerman gives a kiss for the Kiss Cam when Shanny’s too shy.
As of today I have exactly 15 months until my 30th birthday. It’s the perfect time to announce that I am 1/3 of my way through my 30 before 30 list.
Yesterday I crossed a 10th item off my list after I ran the 29th Annual Corktown 5k.

Photo courtesy of Chuck - I was too cold to take a picture at the race
It was a last minute idea, Lisa called me a week before and asked if I wanted to run it. Coincidentally, I was going to ask her if she wanted to run the Shamrock 5k in Ann Arbor but due to low funds I hadn’t. We’ve been talking about completing a 5k for over a year now but we hadn’t gotten it together.
We picked up our race packets from Running Fit in Northville on Friday and I also bought new shoes. I’ve never been fitted for running shoes, I had used whatever I had lying around. I should have done this sooner because my new shoes are so comfortable. I think I may need inserts though because by the end of mile 2 my arches were starting to whimper.
I didn’t know what to expect but I think the Corktown 5k was the perfect place to start. I was so glad I had Girl Talk to keep my company down Michigan Ave.
In review of my 30 before 30 list, here are the ones I am almost positive I will have completed by fall:
If I can accomplish those I will have reached the halfway point. A few items on the list are travel and if those are the only things I don’t get to I would be ok with that.
What’s on your life list? Any advice for a newbie 5k(er)?
Around…
