endlessly curious
It’s November?!
I know I start a lot of posts like that. Time flies by and I have no idea where it has gone. This year we have less pictures to document how we spent our summer, hell most of fall too. Changing jobs at the beginning of summer may have had something to do with it.
Oh well, it’s November now and Halloween is behind us. The television is pissing me off showing commercials for Christmas movies when all I want to do is concentrate on Thanksgiving. I do like to eat, ya know. And the radio station 105.1 started playing Christmas music before Halloween. Yes, BEFORE October 31st. That is wrong. So wrong that Detroit’s “Christmas Station”, 100.3 polled their audience on whether or not they wanted to hear Christmas music now or later. Granted this was probably because 105.1 stole their Christmas thunder, as 100.3 in year’s past started playing holiday music on November 1st. Luckily, the D doesn’t have 2 stations playing Christmas music just yet. Wow, /endrant.
We spent the last weekend taking care not to hurry. As mentioned above, that ended in a crazy rant about Christmas, Chuck and I have felt a bit rushed the past few months. Always had somewhere to be or something that needed to be done. I’m sure every weekend wasn’t like that but we were starting to feel a bit worn out. Friday night we made an agreement that we wouldn’t be in a hurry for any reason on Saturday. The result? We ended up being productive and had fun.
Stella made new friends at the Parmenter’s Cider Mill in Northville, the pet store and 3 Dog Bakery in Plymouth. Speaking of the cider mill, I learned that Northville has a winery so I picked up some Pink Moon wine to try. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love the label. I’m also waiting for them to call and tell me that their cranberry apple wine is back in stock.
Sunday brought a slightly faster pace but wasn’t unbearable. My hockey team lost it’s third straight game but I had a pretty amazing skate. I was feeling pretty confident and had 2-3 shots on goal. Pretty good for my third game. My teammates even commented on it. I was really looking forward to playing in my first tournament this upcoming weekend but because I’m 7 months shy of 30, I’m not eligible. I bet this is the first and only time I’m disappointed at not being 30 yet.
For my birthday I got my very own DSLR, a Canon Rebel T3. I had all kinds of high hopes of making time to teach myself more about manual mode, aperture, shutter speed and lighting. Then life happened and my summer was stuffed full of fun stuff, regular stuff and stuff I didn’t want to do. As much as I dread winter, I always seem to have more space in my schedule. Though I was busy, I did tote my camera around when I thought it would be a good time to experiment and like my previous post my subjects were my furbabies – or mostly Stella.
I have a friend that ventured to Thailand this past year and she (Hi Amy!) told me stories about the Thai massages, among other things that made me rethink wanting to visit this exotic location but that is neither here nor there. I’m very interested in Eastern medicine and homeopathic healing so after hearing about her 3 American dollar massages in Thailand I added it to my list of things to try, right underneath acupuncture.
My friend Groupon, sent me a little message. Ok, Groupon sends me alerts everyday, but the preview ad was for a Thai massage institution no more than 5 miles from my house. Score! Added bonus? It was only $60 for a couples massage so Chuck got to enjoy the experience too.
I’m not going to lie and pretend that I’m naive enough to think that some places around may be less than professional. I just crossed my fingers and hoped that since this place was advertised on Groupon that there would be no…dirty sheets.
Body & Soul Thai Massage was a cute little building located on Northwestern Highway in Farmington Hills. We were greeted at the door and because we requested a Thai massage and not a signature massage, we were shown to different rooms. Sandy, my masseuse, was very quiet as she worked. I was really surprised at how many knots I had in my legs, and believe me I felt every single one. The only thing I was disappointed about was she spent a lot the hour on my legs and my shoulders are where I carry most of my stress. I’ve had other therapeutic and sports massages and they focused mainly on my shoulders. Regardless, she knew what she was doing because there are days in yoga where it is unbearable to keep my arms raised. It’s been over a week since my Thai massage and at yoga tonight there was no pain keeping my arms raised in the warrior positions or any other position for that matter. My muscles are loose and my flexibility has increased.
Chuck enjoyed his massage as well with Annie. If you talk to him he’ll praise everything about her. She talked to him while she worked asking him questions and pointing out problem areas. He’s not a huge fan of therapeutic massages and he was really surprised at how much better he felt after this experience. He’ll talk your ear off about it if you ask.
Verdict : We will definitely be back to Thai Body & Soul

I have articles and a video I compiled today to share but first let’s start with the last article I read.
Lecavalier was absent from this morning’s practice. For a good reason of course, he and wife welcomed their second child, a baby boy.
The Lightning home opener at the newly remodeled St. Pete Times Forum was a not a win. $40 million in renovations doesn’t guarantee a win but maybe it helped pack the place with a sell out crowd of over 19,000 fans. C’mon they have a party deck. Yep, party deck. Curious about the renovations? Read about it or check out some pictures.
(I might be a little lot jealous. But we’re making plans to check them out ourselves early next year.)
Another loss, this time at home, is making fans wonder where the team that battled so hard in the playoffs is this season. Personally, I think it’s still early to judge though it’s always nice to bank points at the beginning of the season. Some think Roloson may be creaking a bit.
I think this was my favorite article from today. An open letter to the Tampa Bay Lightning Players from Raw Charge.
We need some wins soon but I think like a lot of other teams *coughWingsPowerPlayscough* are still figuring it out.
{sidenote: What is with all this time in between the Wings games this month? We need this break in February, not October.}
{fun fact: Last time the Wings went 4-0 to start the season was in 97-98 when they won the Stanley Cup.}
I’ll leave you with the Proud Dad of the day, Lecavalier’s top shelf goal last night.
Well it’s September already. I’m sad that it’s that time of year where I’m in limbo between summer and the start of hockey. It can be a bit depressing with the weather getting cooler and the days getting shorter and nothing to watch on tv. The US Open is even over.
At the beginning of June I eluded to changes that the summer was bringing.
I still can’t believe that summer is “officially” over since Labor Day is behind us. The highlight of my day was some hockey related news.
Breakfast with Vinny Lecavalier! My favorite clip is the 3rd in his game room with all the pictures of when Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup in 2004.

Some recent weird hockey news that I wasn’t expecting was Amways sponsorship of the Detroit Red Wings. What is that all about? It’s not like they needed the sponsorship money. I will hold out hope that maybe the Wings will be getting a new arena soon. I can dream, right?
I was an art major in college for a semester or two. My interest was photography but to get there I had to take drawing, and I will be the first to tell you, I can’t draw. I’m pretty sure I annoyed my drawing professor because rotating a shape is lost on me. After the drawing disaster I decided the smart thing to do was change my major back to journalism because I understood words a great deal more than rotating the freakin’ box.
It was at the end of the semester I had a one on one with my photography professor. When I mentioned I was changing my major back to journalism she said maybe that was a good idea, or something along those lines. I was crushed, I had always loved photography. Were my images stellar? No. Could I have used some help? Yes, isn’t that why I was in her class to begin with, to learn?
Why am I sharing that little piece of history with you? After that major disappointment I put photography aside. I took a photojournalism class but I wasn’t really into it, I was terrified someone else would tell me I had no talent. Now 8 years later, I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter what one person’s opinion of my work was. and with that realization I decided to commit to learning photography again. A long term goal is to become an amateur pet photographer, as I was inspired when I read an article about real estate photographer Ginger Monteleone’s work with shelters . There is no time limit on my learning and I don’t think I’ll ever be a professional. It is just something I enjoy. Lucky for me, my dogs are great models, with the exception of Scooby.
After years (years!) of talking about buying a DSLR, Chuck bought me my first one for my birthday. It’s a Canon Rebel T3 and I adore it. I’ve only had it for a couple of days, the package came early and I wasn’t about to wait until the 14th to start using it. There is a lot to learn and it can be a little overwhelming but I’m extremely excited about it.
Hi! My name is Maria and my life has been in quite a whirlwind. In the past few weeks I’ve:
My birthday is in 12 days – It will mark the last year of my 20′s, I better make it count
Today marks 4 years since my Hanalei, Kauai beach wedding with close family and friends. Not to be all mushy, because y’all (when did I start saying y’all?) know that’s not my style, here are some pictures of Chuck and I taken in the past year. Another year passed filled with lots of fun…
Every year it seems that around March I’m complaining about how much I hate winter and I’m tired of being cold and then all of a sudden it’s June. This year is no different.
I’ve been engrossed in the NHL playoffs, mostly because the Tampa Bay Lightning made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in a year where they signed a new GM (Detroit’s very own Stevie Y) and new head coach. While I didn’t get to watch the game, I did listen to it with Tampa Bay’s own Dave Mishkin, while sitting next to the bonfire at the cottage. Though it wasn’t the ending I hoped for the Bolt’s season, I was ok with it. Now I’m rooting for Vancouver, what about you? You seriously have to, HAVE TO, love technology and the TuneIn radio app. Check it out, you can stream any FM radio station. Yes, any of them, worldwide.
And you know that trip I briefly mentioned at the end of the very long post dedicated to Chuck’s birthday? Yeah, we went to Ireland. We had no plans but a round trip flight to plan around. It was exciting and exhausting. I would call our first trip abroad successful. We are lucky we travel so well together. There were only a few times we felt like throwing each other off cliffs or off the bus. Hey, it’s to be expected.
You can find almost all of Ireland pictures on our shutterfly website, but I haven’t gotten around to adding the last 2 days. There are just so many pictures!
At the beginning of May, after meeting lots of dogs and puppies, we finally found the perfect pup for our family. Stella is now 4 months old and adjusting nicely, though Scooby is a bit cranky at times. Liko, surprisingly, loves to play with her.
My Dad, Chuck and I braved the rain for the Detroit Zoo Kidney Walk in memory of my Mom. The weather was truly awful and after a couple hours we were soaked to the bone. We had a good time though and the polar bears were playing and active. Thank you to everyone that donated, I raised over $300 for the National Kidney Foundation!
The past couple months have been crazy with changes and new opportunities. I’ll get around to sharing them too. I’m known for taking on a lot of things at once and this time is no different. I never start one thing at a time, it’s usually 10.
Last night’s game was hard to watch but the Red Wings put up a gallant fight against the San Jose Sharks. I’m sad but at least I’m not embarrassed. Well the hit between Hudler and Cleary that took Cleary out of the game might have made me wince.
Lucky for me the Wings aren’t my only NHL team. Yes I’m from Detroit, yes I’m aware that Steve Yzerman is now the GM for Tampa Bay but I promise you this is not why I’m a Bolts fan. Those reasons have nothing to do with my devotion to this Eastern Conference team. I’ve written about it elsewhere but a quick recap – I watched the Lightning win the Stanley Cup in 2004 and they officially became my team when we moved to Tampa in 2005, when they weren’t that great. Since then we’ve watched all the games we could, flew to Florida each time the Wings played Tampa at their home rink and followed the players careers.
I wish I could be at the Tampa home games now.
Obviously we live closer to Boston, a mere 12 hour drive, half the time it would take to drive to Florida. We threw the idea out there but when I looked up ticket prices the difference between the TD Garden and the St. Pete Times Forum amazed me. Prices for the Forum started at $50 and at the Garden $145 on Ticketmaster. I’m from Detroit, I get why but it doesn’t take away the shock factor.
So lucky Tampa fans who are going to the playoffs or maybe hold season tickets now, take advantage while you can. With Stevie as your GM and Boucher kicking butt as head coach, your ticket prices are almost guaranteed to rise in the coming years. You’re safe next season, as I heard they aren’t raising prices, but I’d bet my bottom dollar they won’t be that affordable in the future.
When Saturday evening rolls around I’ll be cheering on the Bolts from my couch and it has to do with the fact that I know this team, almost as well as, I know the Wings.
Around…
